Walter Camargo is a great example of the many amazing fathers that join Families First’s programs. As a recent graduate of the Power of Parenting program, Walter dedicated 12 weeks to building his parenting knowledge and skills to become a stronger, more intentional father for his daughter Amelia.
He told us, “It is beautiful because, whether the program was online or in person, it didn’t matter. We were all there for the same reason: for the love for our children. So, through it all, in different topics, whether videos, explanations, or discussion, we always worked toward the question: how can we better understand our children so that we can guide them through this world just a little bit better.”
Walter was also asked to speak at Families First’s 2020 Breakfast Benefit. He shared his experience with the group at our first virtual Breakfast event. He said:
I’m Walter Camargo and I’m Colombian army veteran and all my life learned that life is serve for others. Two years ago, when my wife asked to me about taking care our daughter because it’s difficult for a mother alone here. I had a beautiful experience making my decision: keep on working in my country or come here to take care of my three-year-old daughter. So I changed my backpack and my weapon for a hairbrush and a big hug every day that fills my soul. I found the balance in my life.
For me the most important thing during this program was the opportunity to recognize and learn about cultural diversity. A group of people from different countries gathering because of the love of their children, it was an amazing experience.
After this amazing opportunity I can say to you that my daughter is growing up beside me with a great message in her mind: “I like myself”! Furthermore I want to express my gratitude to Families First because of this kind of program I found the strength and pride of being a parent leader. For me this means to help others and to have the opportunity to learn from other experiences about how to raise a child with love and respect.
