Parenting Programs
Emotions
Building on an emotional foundation developed in conjunction with responsive parenting in infancy, children learn to interpret the emotional responses of others, understand a wide range of emotions, and manage their feelings more effectively. The more opportunity children have to learn and practice emotional competence over the years, the greater the positive affect on their family relationships, peer relationships, academic performance, and talents. This series explores how emotions develop and describes the skills involved in positive social and emotional functioning.
Session One
Emotions and Development
The development of social and emotional functioning begins early in life and is influenced by a child’s social environment; in particular, the social environment provided by caregivers. In this session, parents will learn the functions of emotions in human development and relationships as well as how parents can actively help children manage their emotions.
Session Two
Emotions and Intelligence
Definitions of social and emotional intelligence vary but they generally consist of a set of abilities involved in reasoning, emotional response, and a broad set of non-intellectual abilities related to managing emotions and social relationships. These skills are useful in thinking about emotional and social development and the many ways parents can promote children’s competencies in these areas. In this session multiple intelligence, emotional intelligence, and social intelligence will be defined. Parents will learn ways to promote the development of emotional competence in their children.
