Insight from the Board Chair

Q: How and why did you become connected to Families First?

A: I was connected to Families First over eight years ago through my mother-in-law, who was involved with Families First from its inception in 1988, and my neighbor, who was a board member. As a parent and a social worker, I immediately identified with the mission “to strengthen families.” And, selfishly, I knew I would benefit from any parenting tips I could glean from the knowledgeable staff and parent educators!

Q: How do you describe the work of Families First?

A: Families First has a talented, passionate group of parenting educators who deliver interactive, research-based programs on child and adolescent development and parenting strategies in a variety of settings like shelters, schools, and community centers.

Q: What tools have you implemented that you learned from Families First?

A: I have attended several Families First workshops and have incorporated much of what I have learned into my parenting and now claim it as my own! Learning about temperament and becoming aware of differences and similarities in my temperament and my children’s has helped me to be more patient and to adapt my approach to the individual needs of my kids.

"Families First combines two of my passions - parenting and education. From my experiences both working with families as a social worker and attending workshops as a parent, I am convinced of the power of groups for educating, connecting, and empowering parents."
