Mellon Partners With Families First
In July 2004, Families First received a $40,000 grant provided by the Mellon Charitable Giving Program through the generosity of the Alice P. Chase Trust. This grant will allow Families First to provide tailored parenting workshops and professional training at five Mellon New England community partner sites. Each site will receive a tailored series of five parenting workshops based on the specific needs of the parents at each location. In addition, each site will receive two professional training workshops to increase staffs knowledge of child development and understanding of site-specific child rearing issues; and to enhance their skills so that they may effectively support the parents during and after the completion of the workshops. In all, thirty-five programs will be provided.
This grant will also fund the creation and launch of new curriculum to assist grandparents in their role as caregivers. When completed, Families First will collaborate with Mellons community partners to pilot the program with two pilot workshops. Following this and with input and feedback from the workshop leaders and grandparent participants, we will significantly refine and fine-tune the program, prior to offering it as part of our ongoing program menu. Our programs emphasize prevention and skill building so that parents may build constructive and satisfying relationships with their children and work out difficulties before they escalate into crises or spiral into abuse.
With 2,400 employees in greater Boston, Mellon New England represents the Boston-based businesses of Mellon Financial Corporation. Through its charitable giving program, Mellon New England plays an active role making communities better places to live and work. Since 1997, this program has invested more than $16 million in support of more than 200 Boston-area community groups.
Families First Partners with John Hancock on Behalf of Boston Families
John Hancock Financial Services awarded $150,000 to Families First to support and promote healthy family relationships through a comprehensive sponsorship campaign. The three-year partnership will help subsidize parenting programs for low-income parents in Massachusetts, support Families Firsts fundraising efforts, and provide a number of ways to deepen the partnership with John Hancock.
We are thrilled to receive such a generous donation from John Hancock, especially as it will allow more families in the Greater Boston area to participate in Families First Parenting Programs, said Crista Martinez, Families Firsts Executive Director. Together, John Hancock and Families First can work in the community to strengthen those critical connections between parents and their children.
John Hancocks mission in the community is to provide the greatest level of support for Boston youth most in need. And this partnership with Families First is a natural extension of their efforts to make a real, measurable difference in the lives of Bostons youth.
