Children and the Internet: Maximizing the Positives, Minimizing the Risk

Category: School Age and Teen Related Issues
Age range: ages
9-18

The impact of communication technology on families is great and the revolution is only in its infancy.  Multiple aspects of child development as well as family life itself have been affected by access to information and the pressures of living in a technological era.  There are certainly benefits to the appropriate use of the internet for adults and for children. However, because children are still developing cognitively, socially, emotionally and physically there may be more to be concerned about regarding the use of technology and specifically the internet. This session helps parents understand the impact of technology on their children and establish their own guidelines for the developmentally appropriate use of the internet. Strategies for keeping children safe are also shared.
